When we spend our lives merely surviving, life can start to look a touch empty and pointless.

Nevertheless, this is often exactly what most folks live. We work for eight hours or more each day. And then we are feeling too tired and exhausted to try to do anything useful or meaningful with our time. So, we sit and watch TV.

The same thing repeats every now and then and therefore the most excitement we'll ever get is a holiday once a year to look forward to.

Is that living?

Here are four simple changes which will make your life more meaningful:

Learning

Constant learning is a good way to bring more meaning and direction in our lives. Ultimately, one of the items that the brain craves most, is growth. If it isn’t challenged to find out and grow, then it'll shrink. The result is that we will become set in our ways. Make it your job to always learn new skills and pursuits. These may be associated with your career, a hobby, or a second or third language!

Relationships

Likewise, relationships are an important facet that lead to great happiness. If you don’t have meaningful relationships, then you don't have anyone to share things with. You could be sharing your experiences, your challenges and your triumphs.

A true ‘meaningful’ relationship goes beyond those friends that you only meet in a group. Having and cultivating real friendships is important. This friend is often someone that you can have a deep heart-to-heart conversation with. A friend with whom you share a long and meaningful history with.

Challenge

Challenges and a little risk also help in making things meaningful and worthwhile.

Have you ever been in a situation that was truly a life and death situation? Or perhaps an incident that put you in a challenging situation? A situation where you were on the brink of accomplishing something amazing?

This is when the brain focuses and starts engaging with the world. These are the moments that help us learn and make us realize the worth of what we possess. It puts things in perspective and creates stories. Don’t recoil from the things that test you!

Travel

Finally, everyone should try and have some amount of travel in their lives. This doesn’t mean you've got to backpack across the dessert. Simply having the ability to experience new sights and new people is vital. It keeps your mind open and your experiences varied. If you don’t have the budget to travel far, then come up with an adventure you'll enjoy a touch closer to home.

There are many more instances and we shall discuss these in subsequent articles.
