People talk about moving out of one's comfort zone. The question is why should one move out of their comfort zone. After all the comfort zone is just that – a comfort zone. Where we feel safe and secure and in control. It is a zone where we know in advance what will happen and how we are likely to feel. It is a zone where we know that you will not encounter any surprises that we are not ready to deal with.
So the question is – why would we really want to get out of our comfrt zones? The answer is that getting out of the comfort zone is the key to our personal growth and happiness. It will change the way you see yourself and it will make you much more confident of your self.
Is being in you comfort zone holding you back from living a fulfilled life and growth in your career?
The answer is yes. Dwelling in our comfort zone is keeping you from realiszing your goals and achieving what you most desire. You don’t get challenged when you stay in your comfort zone since you are not required to rise to any occasion.
Here are 3 ways staying in your comfort zone is holding you back.
1. Your comfort zone keeps you from personally growing. When there are situations that you are afraid of facing your comfort zone protects you from the situation and you no longer have to face the fear. This state can stay forever until you decide to face it. You avoid situations that would require you to face your fears. For example, your fear of public speaking could keep you form a lucrative job that requires you to address audiences even though that would be good for your career and would help you climb the corporate ladder.
2. Your comfort zone often keeps you away from being happy. You would probably face self confidence and self esteem issues. These problems increase unless you decide to venture out of your comfort zone and start addressing them. Stepping out of the zone would help you build self confidence ad see your self as more successful.
When you are full of confidence and don’t have self esteem issues, you are happier. You are willing to try something new. However if you are not confident, you prefer not to try something new. This makes you feel less competent and less happy.
3. Staying in the comfort zone can make you feel ensnared in a trap and you could be unhealthy. You may also get into bad habits out of sheer fear. You may have the need to be more active, participate in a marathon and even go on an adventurous expedition. Sadly, to do all these, you have to do something away from your comfort zone.
As an example – you may wish to participate in a short marathon. This dream of yours gets killed, thanks to your procrastination that stems from fear. You make excuses to yourself. You claim that you don’t have time, you procrastinate and make excuses to yourself. The real reason however is that you are not willing to come out of your comfort zone and train with a professional. You now start eating unhealthy, gain weight and lose muscle mass. You put your dreams on hold and finally you land up with health issues.
When we stay in our comfort zone, we don’t live a life we love. We hold ourselves back from being happy and from growing. We end up letting our fears rule us and we settle for mediocrity.
