Our world is changing. People are more connected, and conscious than ever before. The whole world is making an effort to incorporate more holistic practices into their routine. Meditation is one such practice that everyone, regardless of their age, is taking up.
We all know someone who meditates. For some, it is a daily affair. Some also treat it as a last ditch attempt at dealing with stressful situations. Those moments where you feel like your life is spinning out of control. It’s for those times, when you can’t seem to get out of your own way.
Do you think that meditation is a fad? That it is a waste of time? If you do, you’re in for a pleasant surprise. Meditation is an amazing use of your time. Don't believe me? Take a chance, try it out. The results will speak for themselves.
There are so many delightful and surprising benefits of meditation! In order to appreciate them, first let's talk about what meditation really is. You don't have to be a spiritual person to practice it, neither do you need to be a professional. Meditation is for everyone.
What is Meditation?
The practice of meditation has been around for centuries. People used to practice it as an aspect of religion, but it also became a part of the culture of the time. There are as many forms of meditation.
The art and practice of meditation concentrates on achieving one goal. That goal is slowing down the mind. This is more relevant than ever. We all have such busy lifestyles and even busier minds. Stress levels are up, blood pressure is up and relaxation is down. This is where meditation comes into play.
When you meditate, you allow your mind to rest, relax, and rejuvenate itself. You take the time to practice the art of breathing, slowing down your mind and coming back to center.
What is your center? Your center is the place where your deepest desires live and breathe. It’s the place from which you progress, grow and get back on track. The true aim of meditation is to enter a state of consciousness that is completely aware, and still. In such a state, you remain focused, and prevent your mind from wandering.
Reaping the benefits of meditation takes time and practice. Since centuries, meditation has been practiced in service of a higher purpose. That purpose is to immerse oneself in, and experience, the present. The fundamental pillar of present-moment living.
What is the Power of Meditation?
Some people view meditation as some sort of fantastical make-believe. The truth is that there is power behind meditation. When a person meditates, the brain waves reflect a change. Meditation actually has the power to change your mind, or at least your mindset.
When someone meditates, their brain waves tend to slow down. With proper breathing techniques, beta waves in the brain reduce. When the beta waves reduce, a sense of calm and well-being pervades us.
Meditation affects the brain and its brain waves. Each part of the brain is affected by meditation. Incoming information slows down when meditating, which leads to the following:
Emotions are not as strong
Sensory input slows down
Over-thinking ceases
Information overload slows down
The several parts of the brain that are positively impacted by meditation are:
Frontal lobe
Parietal lobe
Thalamus
Imagine being able to control your brain to some degree and being able to relax, focus, and have more clarity. All this can come from regular meditation. Seems worth a shot, don't you think?
